Replica of the silk brocade found in the reliquary of Saint Siviard, France.
The fabric found in the reliquary containing the remains of Saint Siviard, fifth known abbot of Saint-Calais, died in the 7th century
Apparently, threatened by the Viking invasions, the remains of the saint were moved to Sens in the 9th century, where they were wrapped in a shroud... Later, in the eleventh and twelfth centuries the reliquary was reopened. As a result of these transfers, its dating is not known exactly, but it is probably dated between the 10th and 12th centuries.
This fabulous replica shows a pattern with griffins inside roundels surrounded by vegetal and floral motifs. This style of brocade was very common in Byzantium.
A very similar fabric was found in the tomb of Charlemagne.
The original fabric is preserved in the Cathedral of Sens.
